When Are Mutual Fund Orders Executed?

Understand the differences between mutual funds and stocks/ETFs in terms of intraday pricing and order placement.

  • Mutual funds settle at the end of the trading day, so the purchase price will be the closing NAV for that day.

  • If you place a mutual fund order before 3 PM Central/4 PM Eastern, you will get that day’s closing NAV.

  • Be aware that mutual fund orders placed after 3 PM Central/4 PM Eastern will receive the next business day’s closing NAV.

  • Recognize that the timing of mutual fund orders within the trading day does not impact the purchase price, unlike stocks which are priced in real time.

  • Consider placing mutual fund orders earlier in the day if you want them to be effective sooner.
