Dan Celia: Market Expectations are Overly Optimistic

PHILADELPHIA—Nationally syndicated host and biblical investing authority Dan Celia discusses what he expects for the markets in the weeks ahead.

“As we look at economic data coming up this week, we’ll see consumer confidence index numbers coming out on Tuesday. It’s expected that they will go down. Durable goods orders are coming out on Wednesday. They’re expected to drop as well in December compared to where they were in November. Jerome Powell is holding a press conference on Wednesday at 2:30, and I’m sure everybody’s going to be hanging on every one of his words, even more so than usual because of the uncertainty that continues to creep into the markets.

“On Thursday, we get new home sales and a leading economic indicators number, which is expected to be very close to negative. If it doesn’t near negative in December, it will in the month of January. On Friday we get personal income numbers, consumer spending numbers and the consumer sentiment index. The final look at that is expected to stay unchanged for the month of January. So we’ll see how all of that works out, but it’s going to be an interesting number. Earnings reports so far are looking decent.

“Don’t forget, we saw the cancellation of the Keystone Pipeline permit, and lobbying by the state-run media to increase the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour. All of this is likely to put a very dark shadow on the overly optimistic viewpoint of the markets ahead.”

Celia discusses these and other global and economic headlines on his daily, three-hour Financial Issues program, heard on more than 660 radio stations and several television networks nationwide, including FISM.TV, viewed on several post-cable television platforms and online.
